“Our first objective is to prevent the re-emergence of a new rival, that poses a threat on the order of that posed formerly by the Soviet Union." "The second objective is to address sources of regional conflict and instability in such a way as to promote increasing respect for international law, limit international violence, and encourage the spread of democratic forms of government and open economic systems…" -Pentagon’s Defense Planning Guidance for the fiscal years of 1994 – 1999 Consider the US defense strategies listed above regarding the Middle East. The postwar era witnessed tremendous economic growth and rising social contentment and conformity. Yet in the midst of such increasing affluence and comfortable domesticity, social critics expressed a growing sense of unease with American culture in the 1950s.
Assess the validity (truthfulness) of the above statement and explain how the decade of the 1950s laid the groundwork for the social and political turbulence of the 1960s. Look at the political cartoon to the left and consider the author's main point. Would you rather live in a country that supports communistic or capitalistic beliefs? There is no right or wrong answer to this question, but you MUST EXPLAIN your opinion. Think about the pros and cons each of these systems would have on a society. Consider the quote above made by French General Ferdinand Foch in 1919 concerning the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. In your opinion, how accurate were Foch’s words regarding the end of World War I?
Progressive Era reformers looked for ways to fix the many issues left by the Gilded Age, such as supporting fairer labor laws, women's suffrage, and "trust-busting". Because of their hard work and perseverance, amendments and laws were put in place to prevent such abuses from happening again. While their achievements transformed our nation for the better, do we still have issues in America that need to be addressed? What should be our next reform movement?
